UK SME Acquisitions Showing Stronger Momentum in 2026

Improved lending, easing inflation and succession-driven opportunities are powering renewed confidence in the UK SME M&A market.

News · 1 May 2026 · Market Insight

The UK mergers and acquisitions market is continuing to strengthen throughout 2026, particularly across the SME and lower mid-market sectors. Improved lending conditions, easing inflationary pressures and increased confidence amongst strategic buyers are all contributing to a more active acquisition environment.

Across the UK, many business owners are now revisiting succession and retirement planning after delaying decisions during periods of economic uncertainty. This is creating increased opportunities for acquisitive groups and strategic buyers looking to invest in established regional businesses with strong reputations and long-standing customer relationships.

According to the British Business Bank, SME lending increased significantly during 2025, with lenders showing greater appetite for well-structured acquisition opportunities and growth-focused businesses. This trend is expected to continue throughout 2026 as confidence returns to the wider UK business market.

In particular, sectors such as wholesale distribution, building products, engineering and specialist trade supply continue to attract interest due to their resilient customer bases and long-term infrastructure demand.

Strategic buyers are increasingly focused on businesses which demonstrate:

  • Strong customer retention
  • Stable gross margins
  • Experienced management teams
  • Regional market strength
  • Operational efficiency opportunities
  • Long-standing supplier relationships

While valuations remain disciplined compared to previous market highs, high-quality businesses continue to generate significant interest where there is a clear long-term growth opportunity.

At Flockstone Group, we continue to see strong opportunities across the electrical wholesale and specialist distribution sectors where independent businesses remain highly valued.
